In a pivotal move to address housing challenges in Strathcona Regional District, the City of Campbell River has announced that they will support the hiring of a coordinator for the Campbell River Coalition to End Homelessness.
The City is providing one-time funding of $10,000 for the coordinator position, which will provide the Coalition with capacity to develop a strategic plan and explore potential funding opportunities for affordable housing and housing-related initiatives in the region.
The Coalition represents a multi-sectoral group of collaborators from across the community, including Vancouver Island Mental Health Society, the United Way, North Island Employment Foundations Society, John Howard Society, Habitat for Humanity, Ehattesaht First Nation, Campbell River and North Island Transition Society, AIDS Vancouver Island, Affordable Housing Vancouver Island Society, Campbell River Family Services Society, Radiant Life, the Strathcona Community Health Network, and the Strathcona Regional District, as well as the region’s MLA, the Hon. Clair Trevena, and MP, Rachel Blaney. The group meets monthly to discuss issues and opportunities to address the priority needs of individuals who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness in Campbell River.
The Coalition illustrates the potential impact that PlanH grants—in conjunction with the hard work and vision of community members, community-based organizations, health authorities, and all levels of governments—can have on community health and well-being: the Coalition was incited by meetings convened through the Strathcona Community Health Network, itself an outcome of a 2014 PlanH-supported workshop in Campbell River.
