The newly released results of an intensive study by the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology suggest that rates of obesity (as well as obesity-linked chronic conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke) are dramatically rising in Canada. The committee is calling for a National Campaign to Combat Obesity including a complete revision of Canada’s food guide to better reflect scientific evidence, a ban on advertising food and drink to children, a possible tax on sugar-sweetened beverages, a review of nutrition food labelling to make it easier to understand, and a plan for making healthy food more affordable.
