PlanH, implemented by BC Healthy Communities Society, facilitates local government learning, partnership development and planning for healthier communities where we live, learn, work and play. Working together with health authorities and the Ministry of Health, PlanH supports the Province’s health promotion strategy.
BC Healthy Communities Society
BC Healthy Communities Society (BCHC) provides services, programs, and resources to support multi-sectoral collaboration and engagement for creating healthy and resilient communities. BCHC is a province-wide, not-for-profit organization.
Part of the World Health Organization’s Healthy Communities/Healthy Cities movement, BCHC was established in 2005, and operates a central office in Victoria, BC.
PlanH history
PlanH was originally created through Healthy Families BC, the Ministry of Health’s initiative that ran from 2011–2017, focusing on stimulating more local actions and policies to support healthy living. Through Healthy Families BC, emphasis was given to bringing the health sector together with local governments and other community partners in collaborative ways to make changes in built environments, reduce tobacco use, increase healthy eating, and support prevention for priority populations. BC Healthy Communities’ partnership with the Ministry of Health is ongoing.
