Representatives from communities around the Okanagan Similkameen area are finding ways to put sustainability planning into practice.

Delivered by BC Healthy Communities Society on behalf of PlanH, the February 7th Health & Sustainability Planning Workshop in Penticton was co-hosted by the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen, Interior Health, and the Okanagan Similkameen Healthy Living Coalition.

Participants from the regional district and local governments, not-for-profit organizations, school districts, and Interior Health brought tremendous energy, curiosity, and experience to the workshop.

The group learned about opportunities to use health data in sustainability planning, provide health input into policies and plans, tools and techniques, and opportunities for collaboration.

Participants put their heads together to apply a health lens to an Official Community Plan in development for the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen Area D1.

The workshop also provided an opportunity for the Okanagan Similkameen Healthy Living Coalition to kick-start an idea for a healthy playgrounds initiative. Mark Holland (developer) and Dr. Stephen Berg (UBC professor) shared information about playground design and ideas for getting this idea off the ground.

This event marks the first in a series of Health & Sustainability Planning Workshops to be delivered by BCHC on behalf of PlanH over the coming months. For more information about our workshops, please contact info@planh.ca.
