This workshop will be happening at a future date, REGISTER NOW.
This free learning opportunity is targeted to local government and regional district staff and elected officials, health authority staff, and community partners who are involved or interested in planning, programming and development in Northern BC.
The community resources necessary for optimal health and well-being are many of the same things that contribute to a sustainable community. These include fundamental human needs such as good quality, affordable housing; access to public transit, schools, and parks; safe routes for pedestrians and bicyclists; meaningful and productive employment with fair wages; unpolluted air, soil, and water; and, cooperation, trust, and civic participation. In addition to the ways that these elements enhance sustainability, evidence shows that better access to these resources also increases the chance of living healthy, fulfilling lives and avoiding preventable diseases and injuries, while unequal access to these resources across population groups is the greatest contributor to inequities in health and well-being.
- Work together across sectors to develop a shared understanding about the intersection of community sustainability, health and well-being, and the benefits of “joined-up” thinking and action;
- Learn about local health and sustainability trends;
- Identify local opportunities for collaboration and joint action to improve community sustainability, health and well-being;
- Learn about practical resources, tools, and data to create more informed strategies and policies.
LOCAL CONTENT
Topics at the workshop will be driven by your current interests, challenges, and opportunities. In addition to the opportunity to discuss a range of regional issues and priorities that you identify, specific issue topics that will be explored in this session include:
Housing:
How can communities and the region collaborate to ensure that suitable and affordable housing is available and meets the needs of the whole community, including seniors wishing to age in place?
Active Living:
How can our communities and region collaborate to create the conditions for all residents to be active and healthy, while at the same time meet sustainability goals (e.g. greenhouse gas reductions, social inclusion, economic development)?
