We are in a time of disruptive change. In communities, citizens are making their voices heard through formal and informal networks and movements. Many of these movements are having a powerful impact on issues of equity, justice, and inclusion. How can deep, durable, and sustainable change in our communities be the result of citizen movements?

In 2020, David Chrislip, David MacPhee and Patti Schmitt engaged 34 thought leaders to provide input into the design of a Civic Capacity Index. The Civic Capacity Index measures the degree to which communities and community leaders are engaged in creating welcoming and thriving communities.

There are seven areas profiled in the Civic Capacity Index – collective leadership, confronting racism and injustice, institutional synergy, engaging civic culture, organic coalitions, purposeful collaboration and leading together.

The Civic Capacity Index is currently being tested in several communities across the US and is providing those communities with insights about their civic capacity strengths and gaps. Join us to learn more about the genesis of the Civic Capacity Index. David and Patti will share the process which guided the development of the Index and their hopes for how the Civic Capacity Index might transform communities and community leaders.
