Canadian Urban Forest Conference

Date/Time
Date(s) - September 30, 2014 - October 2, 2014
8:00 am - 4:15 pm

Urban forests and trees across the globe are becoming increasingly recognized for their important contributions to human lives and habitats, not least of which is the mitigation of climate change. Our planet is experiencing ocean acidification, deforestation, food and fresh water scarcity, air and water pollution to name a few challenges. As urban populations increase, there is a growing desire for, and appreciation of, urban environments that are healthier, greener, dynamic, participatory and inclusive. It is at the city and neighbourhood scale that most communities and individuals must engage in changing how we live and work in an effort to minimize the effects of environmental challenges.

The 11th Canadian Urban Forest Conference will explore diverse themes that showcase how urban forests are proposed, planned and designed to better support evolving environments. The conference brings together leading experts to share knowledge and stimulate dialogue towards effective collaborations.

Opening Keynote Speaker: Dr. Kalanithy Vairavamoorthy

The Opening Keynote Lecture will set the context for this exciting conference on Urban Forests by Design by addressing the key issue of ‘Adapting Cities to a Rapidly Changing World’.  This session will draw on the expertise of Dr. Kalanithy Vairavamoorthy, an internationally recognized expert in the field of urban infrastructure and engineered ecology.  The lecture will explore how such pressing challenges as climate change, water scarcity, increasing urbanization and biodiversity loss are intensifying efforts to rethink our relationship to the natural world and the ways we choose to inhabit it.  These changes have important implications for the way we design our cities and infrastructure, including the urban forests and watersheds within which they are embedded.

CUFC11 will be held at the Victoria Conference Centre, adjacent to the Fairmont Empress Hotel, where a preferred rate has been established for conference delegates.

Early Bird Rate ends September 8, 2014. Register now!
