The Active School Travel (AST) Pilot Program aims to support B.C. students and families to be more active, more often for the school journey. Using active modes of travel to and from school allows students to spend more time outside while staying connected with family and peers in a way that ensures safe physical distancing. When school communities invest in developing sustainable projects and plans that encourage students to walk and cycle more often for at least part of their school journey, they also support lasting changes in physical, mental and social well-being for students, staff and families.
The goal of the Active School Travel Pilot Program is to support schools to create those behaviour changes using a whole-school approach. With guidance and support, a small cohort of up to 10 B.C. schools will move through an online-based Active School Travel learning curriculum delivered by BC Healthy Communities (BCHC), then design and implement active school travel projects using a range of tools, resources and templates provided by BCHC. The program will run from January to December 2022.
Join BCHC on Thursday, November 4th from 10:00–11:00am PDT for an info session about the pilot. During the session, BCHC will:
• Identify the benefits of active school travel planning and projects
• Describe how this pilot can help your school make sustainable changes that support more students to use active modes of travel to and from school
• Hear from guest speaker(s) from the previous cohort about their projects and outcomes
• Provide details on what participation in the program entails
• Give you all the information you need to submit an application for the pilot
If you can’t attend the info session, you can also review the Application Guide, contact BC Healthy Communities for more information, or submit an application by December 2, 2021.
