The B.C. government announced Move.Commute.Connect., a comprehensive plan to promote active transportation across the province, with a specific goal of doubling the number of trips taken with active transportation by 2030.
Recognizing the need to encourage British Columbians to choose active transportation, the province identified strategies to make active transportation options safe, accessible, easy, convenient and efficient. The province is also aiming to incorporate the Vision Zero initiative, a Swedish project that looks to reduce the number of fatalities or serious injuries from collisions on the road to zero.
The province gathered feedback from community groups, transportation providers, municipal planners, Indigenous communities and other British Columbians to gain a better understanding of region-specific challenges related to active transportation. The province adopted a Gender Based Analysis Plus (GBA+) lens that considers gender, race, ability, sexual orientation, age and language throughout the strategy to incorporate accessibility in the development process.
Some specific plans for the next year include reviewing the Motor Vehicle Act to incorporate active transportation modes such as electric bikes and scooters; collaborating with ICBC to develop content that promotes road safety; expanding the Provincial grant program to include more methods of active transportation; and implementing an Active Transportation Design Guide to help local governments incorporate active transportation in their communities.
