First Nations Health Authority

The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) Community Development team is committed to supporting First Nations driven planning journeys and the development of Health and Wellness Plans through a community or Nation-based approach. The Health and Wellness Plan is a pathway guiding the way forward. It is grounded in community values, culture and traditions, and charts community or Nation practices moving forward to enhance health and well-being.

The First Nations Health Authority is the health and wellness partner to over 200 diverse First Nations communities and citizens across BC. Our mission is to support BC First Nations individuals, families and communities to achieve and enjoy the highest level of health and wellness by: working with them on their health and wellness journeys; honouring traditions and cultures; and championing First Nations health and wellness within the FNHA organization and with all of our partners.

The FNHA’s community-based services are largely focused on health promotion and disease prevention and include:
• primary health care through medical health centres and nursing stations
• children, youth and maternal health
• mental health and wellness
• communicable disease control
• environmental health and research
• health benefits
• e-health and telehealth
• health and wellness planning
• health infrastructure and human resources

The FNHA is also a champion of culturally safe practices throughout the broader health care system. Taking a leadership role, the FNHA actively works with its health partners to embed cultural safety and humility into health service delivery and improve health outcomes for First Nations people.

The FNHA Community Development team, in collaboration with regions, is available to support First Nations communities with questions or requests related to developing Health and Wellness Plans and can provide guidance on potential partnerships.
