Racism is a key determinant of health and well-being, negatively impacting health outcomes of Indigenous and racialized peoples. Though racism is often thought of as a personal internal bias, it is also a system that informs governance structures and impacts their policy and decision-making processes.
A handful of governments across the province, including the CSRD, Burns Lake, Terrace, White Rock, and Mission, have adopted anti-racism policies. Many other communities are exploring different approaches, including broader equity policies and other processes to address overt and covert racism in order to create a more equitable, inclusive community
As part of our Local Government Leaders Speaker Series, BC Healthy Communities is pleased to present Creating Healthy Public Policy: Anti-Racism Policies on November 17, 2021 at 11am Pacific. This session, featuring Columbia Shuswap Regional District Board Vice-Chair Rhona Martin, Deputy Manager Corporate Administration Jennifer Sham, and HR Advisor Kerri Wirth, explores the CSRD’s experience in establishing and implementing an anti-racism policy at the regional district level.
Designed for elected officials and staff in decision-making roles, each event in the speaker series provides participants with the opportunity to explore whether a similar policy fits their community’s needs, and to consider the next steps needed to advance action towards adopting such a policy.
Following the presentation, attendees are invited to stay for small facilitated discussions with other local government leaders and decision-makers from across the province. Those interested in adopting similar policies will be able to ask further questions from the panelists and confer with one another using small group breakout rooms that explore specific topics.
The Creating Healthy Public Policy: Local Government Leaders Speaker Series features healthy public policy leaders from local and Indigenous governments across the province discussing one policy implemented by their government, reflecting on why the policy was chosen, the implementation process, and the impacts they’ve seen as a result of adopting the policy. The series is supported through PlanH, a partnership between BC Healthy Communities Society and the BC Ministry of Health and is informed by health authorities and other stakeholders. PlanH creates healthier communities by supporting partnerships across sectors, providing learning opportunities, resources, and consultation, and facilitating collaborative local action.
